Minerva and the Triumph of Jupiter

My interest in this painting focuses on the development, and arguably the decline, of the standards of role-models from the 1700’s compared to the present. I have created a parody of the original piece by using Photoshop to somewhat mock, but also contemplate, the difference between today’s heroes and those of the past. These adaptations of the original Roman gods are famous influences from the past 40 years. I turned Minerva, the Roman God of Archery and Wisdom, into Nicki Minaj, a female rapper and song writer whose songs are mainly used in a sexual context and whose lyrics are almost always
centered around sex, her genitals and her personal sexual experiences. Nowadays, she is a hero to millions of young girls who listen to her music. Jupiter, the God of Thunder and considered the most powerful God was then adapted into 6ix9ine, a male rapper famous for ‘snitching’ on his partners in crime and evading long-term jailtime. His lyrics mainly focus on money, recreational drugs and his sexual experiences. He was in jail for a total year and in that time managed to obtain a total of 1 billion streams across different musical platforms.

Genesis

‘Genesis’ inspects and analyses the concept of ‘origination to contemporary’. It does so to evaluate and understand how, through the generations, audiences can recognise how the modern teenager of each generation is perceived. In this piece, the idea is to take the infamous sculpture ‘David’ and to transform him into all the subsequent perceptions of teenagers; Whether that be an alcoholic anorexic in the 1800’s, a German boy off to defend his country, or the Australian gangster of the 21st century. These depictions are used to help the audience think in posterity of teenagers and create wonder of how the future adolescent will be observed, for better or worse. In summary, ‘Genesis’ interprets the idea of origination to contemporary through code.

'Chris Lilley'

Today, comedians are being stripped of their individuality and scrutinized for their controversial humour. The debate of censorship or ‘cancelling’ many unique and clever comedians of their artform has been a recent and relevant event.

Chris Lilley, an Australian comedian, actor and director of many films, has recently been subject to such censorship with many of his comedies being removed from popular streaming services for being
too controversial.

My piece about Chris Lilley comments on this issue through the use of code and symbolism of the cubist style. The fragmented effect portrays the way that Chris Lilley would break down and simplify stereotypes of all types of people and cultures to create a satirical joke. The piece is a portraiture of Chris Lilley acting as Jonah from the very popular but contentious ‘Jonah from Tonga’ and includes techniques transposed from Picasso’s analytical cubism.

'Gladys'

I chose to focus on Gladys Berejiklian because of her poor leadership skills. I selected this particular image as it is the first image to come up on Google, meaning that it is a very widespread image that is easily recognisable. I placed a barcode over her pixelated face to symbolise how these leaders think its ok to open everything back up again, as long as everyone logs into every shop with a barcode. My piece is also a statement on how the leaders of Australia were not and are still not equipt to handle Covid properly, with the current situation in New South Wales and Victoria being out of control.

Liberty Leading the People

The reason I decided to appropriate ‘Liberty leading the People’ is because it is a very well-known piece that demonstrates a cultural civil war, which articulates what I am trying to express; my dissatisfaction with how Anastasia Palaszczuk favoured the NRL/state of Origin and left the Australian music scene in the dark.

Every single person created in this piece is a real-life musician that I have both listened to and planned to go and see at their concerts during the past couple of years, yet was unable to because of Queensland restrictions. The back story to this is how Palaszczuk let the state of origin go on earlier in the year, yet musicians experienced heavy restrictions on them, many not being allowed to play at all.

Damnatio Memoriae

‘Damnatio Memoriae’ depicts a painter covering up a vandalised painting of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci, which is on display in a street along the footpath. The Graffiti is inspired by Banksy to create a controversial affect. The Last Supper is used in this work as an advertisement, to mock different cultures. The image of the workman covering up the painting, and its graffiti, symbolises the disregard for history. The frame acts like a window for the audience to look through and in a way the effect suggests that the audience is looking in and observing society.
